EU Ship Recycling Regulation: Evaluation and list update

End-of-waste criteria specify when certain waste ceases to be waste and becomes a product or a secondary raw material. Read the guidelines on the separate collection of household hazardous waste. For more information on the classification of all types of waste (including hazardous), see the European List of Waste. The Waste Framework Directive provides additional labelling, record keeping, monitoring and control obligations from the “cradle to the grave”, in other words, from the waste production to the final disposal or recovery. Hazardous waste poses a greater risk to the environment and human health than non-hazardous waste and therefore requires a stricter control regime.

  • Third, users could suggest translations for phrases where they think they can improve on Google’s results.
  • Google Translate recognises the text from the image using optical character recognition (OCR) technology and gives the translation.
  • They establish clear and consistent calculation guidelines for recyclers, aiming to prevent unfair competition in the EU’s market for secondary raw materials from waste batteries.
  • 14th edition of the European List of ship recycling facilities
  • The European Commission has launched a public consultation on rules for calculating, verifying and reporting recycled content in single-use plastic (SUP) beverage bottles, including chemically-recycled content.

The amendment also aims to increase the protection of the environment and human health by ensuring proper management of battery-related waste. It identifies and classifies all different types of waste, including hazardous waste, which can be harmful to human health and the environment. The European List of Waste is a key instrument to properly manage waste in the EU and control waste shipments within and outside the EU. This supports the Battery Regulation’s objective of shifting to a circular economy, increasing security of supply for raw materials and energy, and enhancing the EU’s strategic autonomy. Batteries are a key technology to drive the green transition, support sustainable mobility, and contribute to climate neutrality by 2050.

Supported languages

The Google Translate app for Android and iOS supports 249 languages and can propose translations for 37 languages via photo, 32 via voice in “conversation mode”, and 27 via live video imagery in “augmented reality mode”. Results are sometimes shown with dictional information below the translation box, but it is not a dictionary and has been shown to invent translations in all languages for words it does not recognize. In May 2025, users across the web found that if a Traditional Chinese phrase entered in the French section is translated to Traditional Chinese, Google Translate will provide strange translations.

Annual third-party verification will be required for the most complex stages of the value chain, i.e. during chemical recycling. The rules aim to balance transparency with minimal administrative burden for companies and national authorities. However, when mechanical recycling is not feasible or when higher quality standards are needed, for instance for food packaging, chemical recycling provides a valuable alternative. Among these technologies, mechanical recycling is typically preferred as it is less polluting and more energy-efficient than chemical recycling. To achieve its recycling targets, the EU supports all recycling technologies that are better for the environment than incineration or landfill disposal.

Google Translate struggles to differentiate between imperfect and perfect aspects in Romance languages. Among the top 100 words in the English language, which make up more than 50% of all written English, the average word has more than 15 senses, which makes the odds against a correct translation about 15 to 1 if each sense maps to a different word in the target language. Furthermore, Google carried out a test that required native speakers of each language to rate the translation on a scale between 0 and 6, and Google Translate scored 5.43 on average. A few studies have evaluated Chinese, citation needed French, citation needed German, citation needed and Spanishcitation needed to English, but no systematic human evaluation has been conducted from most Google Translate languages to English. For 67 languages, a minimally comprehensible result is not achieved 50% of the time or greater.

Moreover, the system automatically identifies foreign languages and translates speech without requiring individuals to tap the microphone button whenever speech translation is needed. As of February 2010, it was integrated into browsers such as Chrome and was able to pronounce the translated text, automatically recognize words in a picture and spot unfamiliar text and languages. Rather than translating languages directly, it first translated text to English and then pivoted to the target language in most of the language combinations it posited in its grid, with a few exceptions including Catalan–Spanish. The framework aims to protect the environment and human health by emphasising the importance of proper waste management, recovery and recycling techniques to reduce pressure on resources and improve their use.

It uses deep learning techniques to translate whole sentences at a time, which has been measured to be more accurate between English and French, German, Spanish, and Chinese. In May 2014, Google acquired Word Lens to improve the quality of visual and voice translation. Despite this, Google initially did not hire experts to resolve this limitation due to the ever-evolving nature of language.

This is the first time the EU has laid out rules for chemically recycled content. The new rules will ensure transparency in calculating the amount of chemically recycled content in new single-use plastic bottles for beverages. The European Commission has launched a public consultation on rules for calculating, verifying and reporting recycled content in single-use plastic (SUP) beverage bottles, including chemically-recycled content. They establish clear and consistent calculation guidelines for recyclers, aiming to prevent unfair competition in the EU’s market for secondary raw materials from waste batteries.

Under such schemes, textile producers will contribute to the management of used and waste textiles. In 2018, an Amending Directive modified the original Directive, aiming to further improve waste management and facilitate the transition to a circular economy. The Framework makes a distinction between waste and by-products – a substance or object resulting from a production process, the primary aim of which is not the production of that substance or object. As well as establishing the five-step waste hierarchy (seen above), the Waste Framework Directive (2008) confirms the ‘polluter-pays principle’ whereby the original waste producer must pay for the cost of waste management. This will increase sustainability for businesses and consumers, and harmonise the single market for used and waste textiles.

Simply type the text you want translated, and our AI translation engine will deliver results in seconds. Since Google Translate uses statistical matching to translate, translated text can often include apparently nonsensical and obvious errors, often swapping common terms for similar but nonequivalent common terms in the other language, as well as inverting sentence meaning. A word in a foreign language might have two different meanings in the translated language. Google Translate, like other automatic translation tools, has its limitations, struggles with polysemy (the multiple meanings a word may have) and multiword expressions (terms that have meanings that cannot be understood or translated by analyzing the individual word units that compose them). Google Translate’s neural machine translation system used a large end-to-end artificial neural network that attempts to perform deep learning, in particular, long short-term memory networks. By detecting patterns in documents that have already been translated by human translators, Google Translate makes informed guesses (AI) as to what an appropriate translation should be.

When used as a dictionary to translate single words, Google Translate is highly inaccurate because it must guess between polysemic words. Due to its identical choice of words without considering the flexibility of choosing alternative words or expressions, it produces a relatively similar translation to human translation from the perspective of formality, referential cohesion, and conceptual cohesion. Since 2020, Google has phased out GNMT and has implemented deep learning networks based on transformers. In September 2016, a research team at Google announced the development of the Google Neural Machine Translation system (GNMT) to increase fluency and accuracy in Google Translate and in November announced that Google Translate would switch to GNMT. Second, Google showed a proposed translation for a user to agree, disagree, or skip. In August 2016, a Google Crowdsource app was released for Android users, in which translation tasks are offered.

The Commission published new rules on Friday for calculating and verifying recycling efficiency and the recovery of materials from waste batteries. EU rules on packaging and packaging waste, including recycling targets and recycled content. Moreover, a number of languages are translated into a sentence structure and sentence length similar to a human translation.

  • A January 2011 Android version experimented with a “Conversation Mode” that aims to allow users to communicate fluidly with a nearby person in another language.
  • The measures will also benefit the environment, as they will economically incentivise producers to reuse plastic waste, rather than disposing of it in landfills, littering or incinerating it.
  • Their work addressed a scarcity of research on the environmental impacts of implementing textile-to-textile recycling at scale in the EU, which the team felt would be needed to direct resources effectively in addressing the textile waste problem.
  • Google Translate also provides translations for Google Assistant and the devices that Google Assistant runs on such as Google Nest and Pixel Buds.
  • Before October 2007, for languages other than Arabic, Chinese and Russian, Google Translate was based on SYSTRAN, a software engine which is still used by several other online translation services such as Babel Fish (now defunct).

It is a rule-based translation method that uses predictive algorithms to guess ways to translate texts in foreign languages. Although Google has deployed a new system called neural machine translation for better quality translation, there are languages that still use the traditional translation method called statistical machine translation. Volunteers could select up to five languages to help improve translation; users could verify translated phrases and translate phrases in their languages to and from English, helping to improve the accuracy of translating more rare and complex phrases.

Human evaluation from English to all 102 languages shows that the main idea of a text is conveyed more than 50% of the time for 35 languages. For many other languages vis-à-vis English, it can produce the gist of text in those formal circumstances. Accuracy decreases for those languages when fewer of those conditions apply, for example when sentence length increases or the text uses familiar or literary language. GNMT’s “proposed architecture” of “system learning” has been implemented on over a hundred languages supported by Google Translate. Moreover, it also analyzes bilingual text corpora to generate a statistical model that translates texts from one language to another.

Since SMT uses predictive algorithms to translate text, it had poor grammatical accuracy. It translates multiple forms of texts and media such as words, phrases and webpages. Reports can be generated based on your activity and those of others. Your activity on this service can be used to build or improve a profile about you for personalised advertising and content.

The second step expands the methodology to encompass all recycling technologies, including chemical recycling, by establishing rules to calculate the proportion of recycled materials in PET bottles. The adoption of the rules will enable chemical recycling in the EU and will help economic actors meet the ambitious recycled content targets set under the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD). The methodology for measuring the recycling efficiency of recyclers, which quantifies the total amount of materials recycled, is established for batteries containing lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, lithium and other materials. The new rules aim to support a circular, resilient and competitive economy by keeping the materials used in batteries in the economy for longer, thus preventing waste.
